Selfhosted discord alternative
What's the issue with clones like FossCord? What exactly should be different? What's "wrong" with the existing solutions? Because you don't mention that at all.

Es gibt das https://fosscord.com/ Projekt

There's Fosscord which aims to be a FOSS Discord alternative. Otherwise go for Matrix, Mattermost or Rocketchat.

Do we have alternatives to discord or its open source clients?
There's Fosscord, which is supposed to be a server and client compatible with Discord. Not sure how far along they are at this point though.

Add Discord to Flathub officially
Problem starts here, unofficial Flathub package is unofficial. So when Discord pushes an update, whoever maintains that unofficial package is not notified about it by Discord. Until they notice it or someone notifies them, the Flathub package will not be updated. When Discord on Linux is not at the latest version, you don't let us keep using Discord, you give us error and two options as deb and tar.gz, one is incompatible and other one is hard to maintain. It's unofficial, but that doesn't mean using it is against ToS. If you read its source code, you will see it just downloads tarball from official Discord servers and make it compatible with Flatpak format. https://github.com/flathub/com.discordapp.Discord
The flatpak package already uses this by default and we have been since June 2021 (https://github.com/flathub/com.discordapp.Discord/commits/master/disable-breaking-updates.py)
- Thinking of switching from Windows 11 to Linux Mint.
- First time Discord install - Blackscreen
-
Yeah right, "lucky day" indeed with Arch BTW (EndeavourOS)
The problem is that it has to modify a user file not a system file. Packagers don't really like doing that. See https://github.com/flathub/com.discordapp.Discord/blob/master/disable-breaking-updates.py

Discord don't update
Actually there is a flatpak and snap versions of Discord
-
I love being reminded that Discord doesn't care about Linux (I'm not on a deb distro)
They do have a flatpak for discord: https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.discordapp.Discord. Which is all that I can really expect from an upstream. This is speaking as a previous Release Manager for NixOS.
-
Discord initiated from a tar.gz file does not seem to work on my system.
Just use the Flatpak. Much simpler. https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.discordapp.Discord
-
How do you update Discord?
Run flatpak install flathub com.discordapp.Discord (Also from the Flatpak website.)
