Show HN: UPiano, a Piano in Your Terminal
Hello HN!
This is a Python app I've built for fun, while learning the Textual library, it's a piano/synthesizer app that you can play with the keyboard + mouse.
You can see a demo video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VXit110PcA
You need to install FluidSynth before using it: https://www.fluidsynth.org/
It uses the Python bindings pyFluidSynth library: https://github.com/nwhitehead/pyfluidsynth
- No audio output in Ardour6

Best resources to integrate instrument sounds into a game?
There’s a ton of free synths / sound engines out there. I would start by seeing if you can integrate one of those. FluidSynth (https://www.fluidsynth.org/) is one of the more popular ones. It supports audio samples in the SoundFont format, and there’s a ton of free SoundFont sample banks out there you can find—you can find a bunch of different recommended sample banks, and my personal choice is GeneralUser GS. “GS” is a Roland extension to GM that includes additional instruments and percussion kits.

Timidity++ sound exactly like Windows Media Player
With all the programs you tried, it's hard to believe you missed Fluidsynth. Or maybe you tried it and it didn't work.
- apt list is showing different results for 2 different systems
- Trying to connect keyboard with laptop and play through headphones

VLC+MIDI issue: When playing any ".mid", drums are replaced with non-percussion instruments (e.g. piano) sounds

GitHub - jcard0na/haxo-hw: Haxophone, an electronic musical instrument that resembles a saxophone
They are using https://github.com/FluidSynth/fluidsynth directly on the raspberry and the bom doesn't list an extra chip.

Show HN: LinuxDAW – Quality audio software for Linux
> To my knowledge all VST plugins can be used on Linux (via Wine). Is that not the case?
Yes, although I would recommend Yabridge rather than linvst.
https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge
It should be already packaged in some Linux distros, but building and installation are straightforward. Basically it installs some libraries and an executable which once called will convert a Windows plugin in .dll form in a Linux+WINE loadable .so library.

What Is the Future of the DAW?
If you use the Linux port, you may want to use Yabridge to load Windows VSTs in a transparent way.

Can't switch to linux even if i want to
Look into yabridge. You can test it with your plugins to confirm it'll work. Won't cost you anything.
- New to Linux, need help for guitar amp sims, MIDI, DAWs (A full setup guide).
- qtractor becomes unresponsible after adding vst plugin to midi track
- [ANN] yabridge 5.0.5, with more incremental fixes and improvements
- Best model for FL studio running on linux mint around the 100-140$ range on ebay?

Using on Linux
But yeah Yabridge for me worked the best way. https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge

Trying to get a lv2 plugin work on Linux
NAM vst works with Yabridge. You will get native GUI that way. Protesus is a good alternative with native Linux version and it is integrated into BYOD through GuitarML processor. BYOD is the best sounding guitar software (IMHO), Linux or not.
What are some alternatives?
TinySoundFont - SoundFont2 synthesizer library in a single C/C++ file
LinVst - Linux Windows vst wrapper/bridge
OmniMIDI - A software MIDI synthesizer for professional use.
airwave - Airwave is a WINE-based VST bridge, that allows for the use of Windows 32- and 64-bit VST 2.4 audio plugins with Linux VST hosts
sfizz - SFZ parser and synth c++ library, providing a JACK standalone client
awesome-linuxaudio - [mirror] A list of software and resources for professional audio/video/live events production on Linux.
Musical Artifacts - Helping to catalog, preserve and free the artifacts you need to produce music.
linvstmanager - Graphical companion application for various bridges like LinVst, etc.
Linux-SonivoxEas - Sonivox EAS for Linux and Qt
Camomile - An audio plugin with Pure Data embedded that allows to load and to control patches
linux-hunter - Prototype MH:W companion app for Linux, inspired by SmartHunter
