If Massive is too expensive, the open-source Surge XT softsynth may be a good substitute; it has wavetable oscillators as Massive does, though is also more flexible and newer. (It used to be a commercial product, but was open-sourced when it was discontinued, and has remained under active development since).

No, that has indeed solved it for me. But the first time I encountered it, my friend and I spent quite awhile debugging the problem. Almost 2 hours, I believe. We still have an open issue about that one.

And a related issue is time sharing with user app to make sure that they won't end up running too long to stall main firmware. On OWL this is solved by running apps (patches) in a RTOS thread, effectively it must finish its processing and block on a mutex provided by firmware before a new block of audio is received, otherwise the app is stopped.
