Bass: To get started with bass guitar I'd recommend using a general synthesizer that can load soundfonts and/or sfz sample sets and then finding a bass sound that you're happy with. There are a number out there. Fluidsynth is great for soundfonts, and the Calf plugin set has a GUI plugin wrapper that is pretty easy to work with (but beware that Calf plugins in general have a spotty reputation re: DSP and sound quality). For sfz format, there is liquidsfz and sfizz, among others. I've tried both of them, and found liquidsfz to perform better, had some glitches with sfizz, but I know other people use sfizz and are happy with it.
