How spotify got into fdroid?
F-Droid is for app delivery in general. Only apps from the official f-droid repository are guaranteed FOSS. Third party repos can provide any app they'd like, even proprietary ones. The (unofficial Firefox)[https://gitlab.com/rfc2822/fdroid-firefox] repo for example provides Spotify even though it is not FOSS. If you just have it for Firefox, a FOSS fork is also available in the official F-Droid repo, but under the name "Fennec".

Custom F-Droid Repository with Apps from Play Store
I recently stumbled upon this project https://gitlab.com/rfc2822/fdroid-firefox. It's very handy. It automatically downloads APKs from Github or release pages and publishes an F-Droid repository on Gitlab Pages.

-
Why wouldn't Signal be listed in f-droid? Is there a more reliable SMS (FOSS) program?
It is on f-droid but you need to add a repository: https://gitlab.com/rfc2822/fdroid-firefox#firefox-f-droid-repo-unofficial . alternatively install the apk from signal: https://signal.org/android/apk/ as it self-updates

Playmaker for bridging gPlay apps to fdroid in 2021
I'm trying to use Matlink's cli solution which uses a Google play api fork, which works better than the original one. I say trying, because I'm facing other issues but there is a Dockerfile linked in the issue that does authenticate correctly when built with the PyPi package, which you can use as a reference. On the other hand however, trying to do use gplaycli in OpenSuse tumbleweed with Python 3.9 fails, so id say the solution is not that robust
What are some alternatives?
