A newcomer to Doom.
Check out Woof! to see a more conservative but still enhanced port of Doom, and imp it runs even smoother than GZDoom. The spirce port really can impact the feel of the game.

Is linux best OS for retro gaming?
For classic doom you can use gzdoom and get the WADs in Steam. If you want to stick more to the original, use Woof!, but you need to compile it yourself or use something like the AUR.

PrBoom+, Crispy, Woff!, and others are more vanilla friendly, meaning that you get the same experience as the original clients.
