Picocrypt, Kryptor or Hat?
Which features are you looking for? Just encryption, or also signatures? Do you want to encrypt messages, files or both? All the applications that you mention are more or less experimental, and to that degree I will add https://github.com/covert-encryption/covert which I am one developer of.

Real-World Cryptography by David Wong (2021) Book Review
Yes, hiding ephemeral keys and signatures is something that Covert Encryption that I am working on implements. But using Elligator 2 by itself is not enough and it turns out that very few people in the world know how to do it right (I gather that Loup Vaillant did his own research a couple of years back, although he did consult Reddit for it, and as far as I can tell, no-one else had published an implementation prior to his MonoCypher).

Text encryption software for encrypting notes
Industry standard, no. And most encryption software don't offer the ability to edit files directly. There certainly are websites that can do this in your browser completely locally, if you trust the Javascript they send you, and the implementations which are usually by someone just learning cryptography.

Why did they do it this way?
On #2 there is a format and toolset that I am working on with similar goals, for message and file encryption. You can use either shared passphrases or 25519 public keys to protect your data. It is and will always be completely free in both meanings of the word. https://github.com/covert-encryption/covert

Sunday Daily Thread: What's everyone working on this week?
Just pushed out another release of https://github.com/covert-encryption/covert/ which is a tool that encrypts files and messages faster and better than anything else, and produces much shorter output than PGP, suitable to be used on message boards because it can fit even in a Twitter message. 100 % Python code of course.

Modern signing and encryption
PGP pretty much sucks in file encryption too. It uses bad default settings and runs very slowly. Age is far better and I am working on one that should be even faster and more secure, using modern cryptography only. https://github.com/covert-encryption/covert

As far as I'm aware, Mnemonikey is the first of its kind, rhyming only with the related but conceptually different passphrase2pgp tool, from which I drew my original inspiration.

OpenPGP master key on Nitrokey Start
I think people should seriously consider using something like passphrase2pgp [0] in addition to a hardware key like this. That way you can have a brain key (hopefully generated with diceware or equivalent) to tie together day-to-day keys like this to a more permanent identity. I'm honestly surprised that strategy is not more widespread.

Check out Chris Wellons' tool passphrase2pgp - it does exactly what you're describing by hashing an arbitrary input passphrase with Argon2.

So the easiest way to synchronize gpg keys I found is https://github.com/skeeto/passphrase2pgp - it generates a deterministic gpg key (also ssh keys, x509 certificates...) from a passphrase. Excellent tool

I've locked myself out of my digital life
One way to circumvent this is to use a strong passphrase to deterministically generate the PGP/SSH key [1] to unlock other passwords. The SSH key could grant access to a remote server with backups and the PGP key could decrypt passwords using pass [2].

BIP 39 mnemonic phrase to GPG key?
I know there are tools that can generate GPG from arbitrary inputs, but what I'm really looking for is something with direct compatibility with BIP 39 or (BIP 44) phrases in particular.

My own tool, passphrase2pgp works this way. It generates both OpenPGP and SSH Ed25519 keys from a user-chosen passphrase, and it's designed to send the key straight into the ssh-agent on demand.

Why did they do it this way?
Derive my keypair entirely from a passphrase, with generous key stretching. I never need to worry about backing up my keys. I later extended this idea to OpenPGP and SSH, where I also exclusively use passphrase-derived keys: passphrase2pgp.
