Adding separate drive with password for SMB
If you're already using Cockpit, the company 45 Drives makes a decent front end for Samba (which will take care of SMB shares for you). Otherwise, you can read up on Samba and edit /etc/samba/smb.conf by hand to add your shares and set authorization. Permissions are related to the individual files' permissions, so if you want everyone in a group called household to be able to access the information, make sure that group has access from the shell.

Suggestion for file server
While you’re considering Webmin, Cockpit might be worth a look. The folks at 45 Drives make a samba module for it: https://github.com/45Drives/cockpit-samba-manager

What filesystem for nas ?
Last I knew Cockpit by default doesn't support ZFS by default. You may have to use community provided addins for it like: https://github.com/optimans/cockpit-zfs-manager

Why is the useful part of Jails page seemingly locked to 50% of the screen height?
The ui needs to be revamped. There are many places in v12 that I struggle to think why it skipped their checks before release. The most dangerous of them all is where the logout button is. A clean ui like this would be nice. zfs cockpit plugin
