Both allow you to use an extension such as https://getalby.com or https://github.com/fiatjaf/nos2x to sign with your private key, so there's no need to send those web apps your private key.

No this is not a preferred way! The preferred way is to use an extension called nos2x created by the creator of nostr itself. The extension stores your private key so you log in with the permission that extension gives to the client rather than exposing your private key to every client.
