Many current BAR developers are old BA devs. Many old BA players are current BAR players. Then also the engine fork happened (Recoil) (https://github.com/beyond-all-reason/spring) for similar reason as above, and Recoil+BAR currently receive the most active development, with other Spring RTS games like Zero-K also migrating to Recoil.

Yes, it's using continuously developed fork (https://github.com/beyond-all-reason/spring) of the Spring RTS engine.

Well, my personal preference is for Zero-K/Spring, because I actually like micro :

(BAR used to stand for Balanced Annihilation Reloaded, while Zero-K used to be called Complete Annihilation.)

Just discovered this amazing work inspired by old classics such as Total Annihilation.

Another Total Anhilation clone is open source: ZeroK

If you're tech savy you could probably extend this lua script with a button to write the collected data into a file. It would be a neat feature, in my opinion. The people on discord are very helpful if you want to get into lua widget development.

Not exactly, source code is, art is not exactly and doesn't permit derived work without explicit permission: https://github.com/beyond-all-reason/Beyond-All-Reason/blob/master/LICENSE.md so you can't just release BAR as is with small amount of changes and call it your own game.

The licensing raises an interesting question into whether it's fair or confusing to advertise this as an open source game. The game logic code is open source (Under a vague GPL license, needs to be GPLv2 compatible due to engine license) but most of the other assets are under a "CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0" license hence not open source themselves.
