Link to Angband running code, which has some of the features you're describing. It's a big chunk of C, but about halfway down there's a comment with a bunch of description which might be useful.

This is a known bug in 4.2.3, it's fixed in the development releases that you can find here.

Angband

There is a way to get many people contributing and collaborating to a single project over extended periods, even as individual people come and go. That way is called free and open-source software. See e.g. Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, Brogue: Community Edition, Angband, Cataclysm: DDA.

You won't be able to follow it very well if you don't know C, but you can try skimming through the source code to Martin's Dungeon Bash (the .cc and .hh files). The whole thing only comes to around 180 pages if printed out and is a complete roguelike built on top of very minimal support libraries. Even if you can't follow all of the code logic yet, you can get a full look at what a complete roguelike looks like written down.

If you want to study a simpler C project, Dungeon Bash is a small complete game (using curses, so no fancy UI framework ideas there) that you can pretty much read all the way through and get some idea how a C program is put together.
