turning off the keyboard backlight aka sending binary data to usbs?
Hey. I recently installed pop on an alienware laptop and forgot to change the key lights before I obliterated windows. As a result of this - if the computer is on, the keyboard lights are on, and they shine a beautiful bright blue hue. I'd like to either make that a dim red or be able to turn it on and off. I tried alienfx for linux but it did not work for me. I looked through a few alternatives and it looks like they all operate in a similar way. It looks like I want to use python or c (probably python for something like this) and send codes like these to something. I'm not super familiar with this area of hardware/programming. I have no problem slowly going through these different tools and eventually figuring it out, but if there is an up to date / modern alternative to alienfx or some easy way to do what I have described, I'd love to save some time and frustration.

Alienware Control Program available under Linus?
I had success with alienfx. Check if your device is supported here https://github.com/trackmastersteve/alienfx/blob/master/docs/Knowledgebase/Devicelist.md

Alienware Command Center should go open source
Linux users need to have Windows installed just to tweak a fan setting or a keyboard lighting (You might be lucky if your system is supported by this but damn it give Linux users some support too)

I know absolutely nothing about computers, is there anything I need to do when I get my laptop?
Any AW/Dell software needs to be purged. With Holy fire/orbital bombardment/moon sized space station, etc. For CPU stuff, Intel XTU/AMD Master as appropriate. For GPU Afterburner. HWinfo more than replaces CC for system monitoring. And alienfx covers the hardware features in a lightweight and 99% functional way (its mostly just missing features). If you do have issues with it, just ping the dev and they will get it sorted. Not bad for a single person dev team.

R13 Debacle!!
Major points: disable the capsule update thing in BIOS (you don't want auto updates reinstalling stuff your trying to get rid of). Get HWinfo, Afterburner, and alienfx to replace AWCC.
-
R15 Low CPU Score ... Why?
First, make sure anything and everything from Dell is flushed from the system: CC and SA are both notorious for gumming up the works. Best practace/least hassle is to just wipe the shipped OS and start fresh. XTU, Afterburner, HWinfo, and alienFX should be everything you need, be very lightweight, and not be a borderline performance virus.

AWCC and Non-AW PCs
https://github.com/T-Troll/alienfx-tools? The only issue it seems to have is not having some systems recognized, but that is just a case of getting a message to the dev and getting it added.

How to configure new laptop without Dell malware?
Get the following: AMD Master (or XTU for Intel), Afterburner, HWinfo. That covers tweaking the CPU/GPU and monitoring. Then alienfx for the Dell specific hardware. That should all be a fraction of the size and work without issue.

AWCC not present
Give https://github.com/T-Troll/alienfx-tools a try, its a little thin on fancy UI but it should have all the features your after and its not CC.
