Are there any weapon expansion mods
Forgotten Armament and Underrepresented Items are both great mods. They do a lot to make different weapon groups more viable, so taking halberd or bastard sword proficiency feels like a better option.

BGII EE essential mods
For item mods, I like Forgotten Armament and Underrepresented Items, which port items from NWN2 and Icewind Dale, respectively. Good for fleshing out certain weapon categories that are otherwise a little sparse (clubs, bastard swords, etc).

Tower of Deception: an adaptation of the classic Tower of Deception module, this mod offers a challenging self-contained adventure.

BGII EE essential mods
If you want a challenging dungeon crawl, Tower of Deception, Trials of the Luremaster (ported from Icewind Dale), and Test Your Mettle (ported from Planescape: Torment) are fun.

25 Years Of Baldur's Gate Playthrough, Quest Mod Suggestions?
And Tower of Deception is a neat dungeon-crawl - though a challenging one, and the readme warns you not to try it until you're at a point where you've got some +3 weapons.
What are some alternatives?
Black-Hearts
Ascalons_Questpack - Adds several small quests to BG1 and BGII. For BGT, Tutu, BG:EE, BGII, BGII:EE, and EET.
Jasteys_SoD_Tweakpack - Jastey's SoD related tweaks, for SoD, EET, or even BGT.
Ninde_NPC - Lady Ninde Amblecrown, the evil Necromancer with a tongue like a guillotine, formidable magical skill and a matching ego, can be found in Bodhi's lair only if the PC sides with Aran Linvail. Her romance boasts some more mature content.
Item_Upgrade - The Item Upgrade Mod Pack allows Cromwell and Cespenar to upgrade more items for you. Half of them are conveniences, the other half try to prop up weapon categories that are "weak" by comparison (e.g., maces and clubs).
The_Boareskyr_Bridge_Scene - A mod for Siege of Dragonspear that gives more impact to the important scene at Boareskyr Bridge.
