I created a hud for that. I use that currently. https://github.com/Elagoht/TempOSD. I told how to install and how to move to other corners. It's open source so you can customize it. But you must install osd_cat sudo apt install xosd-bin

I used a dirty hack to do the same on Xorg LINK, but it is essentially what you are describing.
