Feeling like you know javascript until you read other peoples code
There are some recurring patterns I see in other peoples' code, though. I just cloned https://github.com/MoreOutput/RockMUD and found lots of abbreviated names as variables, functions and parameters. Such as: e, r, fn, evt, s and so on.. As I have seen these before, I just figured they are very common BUT I can't find anyone on the god damn web who cares to elaborate on what they are.

50 years of text games – 1977: Zork
Let me shamelessly plug a project I'll probably always be poking at: https://github.com/MoreOutput/RockMUD
I mainly played DIKU stuff so it feels a bit like that OOTB, but its very flexible (i hope).

Looking for an open-source MUD engine to use in my project
ranvier looks great, though it might be more than I need for this project

Do people still use ranvier MUD
Looking at the commit frequency on their GitHub, it looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. I'm not sure if anyone's working on it behind the scenes and just hasn't pushed to the main repository, but it's not a good sign that the last public push was 2 years ago.

Newbie seeking wisdom.
Then that depends on the MUD engine you're planning to use. Evennia is in python, which may help since you're familiar with it, although it is a pretty large and complicated beast. Ranvier is a pretty simple and streamlined MUD engine that is written in Javascript and likely a great place to start if you're not an old MUD player who wants to recreate their old SMAUG or Circle favorite mud. It can be installed via node.js even. Both Ranvier and Evennia (I think) allow you to build the rooms interactively within a running mud (not 100% sure on that)

Modern MU* Platforms: Web-integration, mobile/desktop apps, etc.
Indeed! Another one I forgot to mention is Ranvier in javascript and node.js which I think also allows websockets to communicate in ways other than telnet.

Text Adventure Game
I been working on something similar (very slowly in the little free time I have), and found this: https://ranviermud.com
- What does the future of mud development look like?
- Python or JavaScript - MUD Game
What are some alternatives?
When comparing RockMUD and ranviermud you can also consider the following projects:
encrusted - A z-machine (interpreter) for text adventure games like Zork
evennia - Python MUD/MUX/MUSH/MU* development system
