Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?

One of the side projects I work on is a scoreboard that displays MLB scores. It's highly configurable -- you buy the size panel you want and a Raspberry Pi, install the software, and you can configure it to display games, standings, and news headlines for your favorite team or division.
The problem is that the hardware is purchased by the end user, so it can come in many different sizes. I think we officially support 6 or 7 sizes right now, and each panel can be a chunk of change if you get a nice one. If we wanted to test on every device that means I need to shell out 50 bucks x 7 sizes, plus Raspberry Pi and wiring adapter, so not insignificant for a hobby project. Instead, I wrote a drop-in replacement emulator that makes it super simple to emulate any size panel across a variety of display types.
The most advanced display adapter spins up a minimal webserver and serves emulated images over a websocket, meaning you can display your panel over the network on pretty much any device with a web browser.
I write about it quite a bit, if further interested: https://blog.ty-porter.dev/categories.html#emulation-ref

Emulating Raspberry Pi LED Panels
Hi guys, I'm the developer behind RGBMatrixEmulator, a Python library to emulate LED matrices that run on Raspberry Pi via rpi-rgb-led-matrix driver library by Henner Zeller.

I'm giving out microgrants to open source projects for the third year in a row! Brag about your projects here so I can see them, big or small!
I maintain RGBMatrixEmulator, a Raspberry Pi LED matrix emulator written in Python. It emulates the Python bindings provided by rpi-rgb-led-matrix, the most common LED matrix driver beginners choose when writing code for LED displays.

According to a survey, only 36% of PC gamers buy games at full price.
You should try using Legendary. It's an open-source command-line client for Epic. It does pretty much what Epic does but it's quicker to install/launch games and you won't have to worry about telemetry or "spyware." Although, you will have to buy games through the Epic online store.

[HELP] Problems when i try to run a program using wine.
I'm using an open-source alternative to the epic games launcher (legendary) that uses wine, and when i try to run a game through the terminal, a log of wine shows up.

New game launcher for mac coming soon!
It's an epic games launcher alternative, and a UI frontend for Legendary. (Don't worry, guys. It can launch non-epic games as well đ ) It's simply meant to be like heroic, but this time putting macOS first.

Installed a new os but kept my epic games stuff on my ssd, how do I use the games?
If you are familiar with using the command-line then you can use Legendary and import the game to your EGS, but you will need to do this one by one for each game.

guilt pleasure fr,
Oh, you're talking about the launcher? Just use Legendary. CLI-based, so performance isn't an issue. If you know how to use a command line, you'll know how to use legendary with no problem. You can even launch some games without ever connecting to Epic after downloading them. Highly recommend, it's what I use.

Hay un launcher alternativo, Legendary. (https://github.com/derrod/legendary). Se usa con comandos (al menos la Ășltima vez que lo usĂ© no tenĂa interfaz). Es.. interesante.

UPDATE on running Diabotical on Linux
Grab your favorite EGS client and install the game. For this purpose I am using legendary. Legendary is important later, so it is a good idea to have it installed regardless. At this stage, if you try running the game, the game will crash within moments, and spawn 2 windows: a Wine debug window, and a bugsplat window.

Is it safer to launch EPIC games with GOG? (fear of spyware)
If you want to avoid using the Epic Games Launcher, but still want to play the games you have there, you can use Legendary (which requires you to use a command line) or Heroic Games Launcher(which is based on Legengary and has a Graphical User Interface, so is much more user friendly). Both are open source.
