Modbus
We will never get around replacing old industrial interfaces like Modbus, because there are simply too many and because people still use them in new applications because better the devil you know.
Still we can use gateways and tools to expose the data to newer better options like OPC UA:

Free Modbus to OPC UA gateway
I am using it as a service for Modbus data integration and also for testing with modbus devices. I have implemeted Auth (user, password) in the base library (https://github.com/juangburgos/QUaServer#Users). But I have not made widgets for configuring the server yet. Still WIP (https://github.com/juangburgos/QUaServerWidgets)
