How to start contributing?
You can fork OpenXTalk, clone to your machine, then download all the necessary things and try to build it, document what you had to do to overcome the obstacles you faced. If you can build it, then you can go to openxtalk.org and say I did it! Slap that on your resume.

Daunting and fearing the open source world
Another source is mentor feedback, somebody who tells you he thinks you can do it, some projects seem more open to new contributors, search good first issue, if you will open an issue saying you are willing to commit to say 1-2h a week for a year i believe you will get help.
