Check out OpenKneeboard. You can install (VR and non-VR) and have an image for each aircraft with key performance and engine management data. I like to grab a screenshot from this YT channel.

OpenKneeboard might be able to solve this problem. You can bind commands to a joystick or other device, and if that doesn't work, it also has some utility executables that you could have your button box call to control it.

How Future Proof is WMR OpenXR? Does it support DX12, Vulkan or OpenGL, other than DX11?
By the way, do you think the experimental overlay support extention XR_EXTX_overlay will be finalized anytime soon, or would it still take a long time? Monado supports it and LunarG implementation makes it work on WMR or Meta. https://github.com/LunarG/OpenXR-OverlayLayer Maybe overlay devs should just support the experimental extention(if the extention was supported on all runtimes) if it is going to take a long time anyway.

No, OpenXR does not currently have an overlay system. There is a draft spec and some examples at https://github.com/LunarG/OpenXR-OverlayLayer but that repo hasn't been touched for over a year and I doubt any OpenXR runtimes support it.

Not quite yet, there is an experimental Overlay API that will enable such functionality, but I have not seen any real-world usage of it yet.

Does OpenXR support overlay apps the way SteamVR does (eg: fpsVR and Holoswitch)? And are there any existing examples of overlay apps using OpenXR?
SteamVR does not support OpenXR overlay apps natively, but there is an API layer that can add this capability to any OpenXR runtime, though it has some limitations, and also only works on Windows with Direct3D I believe.
