Gamemaker games run with delayed audio, "No sound device detected. Sounds might not play." when dsound is switched to builtin.
Not sure about the error, but you might wanna try OpenGMK's gm8emulator for playing Gamemaker 8 games on Linux

Backups indeed exist, the path should be set in preferences. Also there's a tool by YAL on GitHub that could help you restore your project: https://github.com/YAL-GameMaker-Tools/YYDebugView
