Check out OpenCord (a FOSS client for Android, it's still in development so it lacks all features) or Aliucord (the official apk modified to remove MOST of its trackers).

Well for the bonus question, you can backup using Linux Android Backup (it also works on Windows and MacOS, and theoretically on Android). It backs up all your contacts, calanders, files and free apps in open formats (so can be reinstalled without the app if it is discontinued). A few days ago beta SMS and call log backup support was added as well.
