Remaining FOSS Obstacles
Well for the bonus question, you can backup using Linux Android Backup (it also works on Windows and MacOS, and theoretically on Android). It backs up all your contacts, calanders, files and free apps in open formats (so can be reinstalled without the app if it is discontinued). A few days ago beta SMS and call log backup support was added as well.

Planning to install LineageOS, don't have enough courage so want to confirm everything
If you're serious about trying to avoid gapps I'd recommend using Open Android Backup to backup and restore apps/data, I found that it made testing out the different options (Lineage with/without gapps, Lineage w/ MicroG from fdroid, Lineage w/ MicroG magisk module, Lineage w/MicroG baked in etc.) significantly less painful!

Apps recommendation
Is Swift FOSS? If not, Open Android Backup (formerly known as Linux Android Backup) is an open source alternative. The only problem is that it (officially) only supports use with a computer (but you probably could run it through Termux with wireless debugging)
What are some alternatives?
