Recent improvements to OctaSine (free and open source FM synth plugin): new waveforms, pitch bend, velocity sensitivity and more
Since I last posted here, I've implemented multiple features for OctaSine, a free and open source frequency modulation synth plugin (VST2, CLAP), some of which were heavily requested.

OctaSine (frequency modulation synth plugin) v0.8.2: migrate from iced v0.4 to v0.6, other improvements
I just released version 0.8.2 of OctaSine, my free and open source frequency modulation synth (source code on GitHub). It is available as a VST2 plugin for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Is OPx-4 worth it?
Then I'd heavily recommend trying out a free FM synth VST before spending any money ;). Dexed is popular, but maybe a bit too much (6 operators), this one or this one might be a bit easier (4 operators) - and your DAW probably already has its own FM synth, like Abletons Operator or FL Studios Sytrus.

OctaSine v0.7.0 released (free and open source FM synth VST plugin for macOS/Windows/Linux) with major improvements
I would like to add it, but not having Apple Silicon hardware to test it makes it more complicated. If you create an issue in the GitHub repository, you will get an email if I add it.

I have been working in Rust for about 4 years, mainly as the developer of aquatic and OctaSine and as a contributor to baseview. I have prior experience in web development using technologies such as actix-web, TypeScript, React, Django and PostgreSQL.

OctaSine (frequency modulation synth plugin) v0.8.2: migrate from iced v0.4 to v0.6, other improvements
Most of the work went into migrating from iced version 0.4 to 0.6. This meant switching to pure widgets and the new, improved styling system, as well as rewriting portions of iced_baseview. iced_audio also needed work for compatibility with iced 0.6, most of which was done by fengalin.

OctaSine v0.5.2 released, with dark mode, new website and bug fixes
Yes, through iced_baseview.

OctaSine, a FM-based VST2 synthesizer written in Rust
I went with iced for the GUI, using the excellent iced_baseview. Iced has been a pretty good experience so far, but the high resource consumption due to how GPU calls are (not) batched is a pain point. If I started over, I might consider other options such as egui.
What are some alternatives?
When comparing OctaSine and iced_baseview you can also consider the following projects:
packed_simd - Portable Packed SIMD Vectors for Rust standard library
vst-rs - VST 2.4 API implementation in rust. Create plugins or hosts. Previously rust-vst on the RustDSP group.
iced - A cross-platform GUI library for Rust, inspired by Elm
sleef-sys - Rust binding for SLEEF: SIMD Library for Evaluating Elementary Functions
aquatic - High-performance open BitTorrent tracker (UDP, HTTP, WebTorrent)
simdeez - easy simd
egui - egui: an easy-to-use immediate mode GUI in Rust that runs on both web and native
duplicate - Easy code duplicate with substitution for Rust
darkfi - Anonymous. Uncensored. Sovereign.
baseview - low-level window system interface for audio plugin UIs
