MMU is also responsible for translating between physical and virtual memory addresses. Making virtual memory support optional is a non-trivial design goal; you're not only allowing userspace to peek at (or straight up overwrite) kernel memory, you also need every executable to be a PIE, or to swap it out to disk as a part of a context switch.

Check out RetroBSD <https://github.com/RetroBSD/retrobsd> and LiteBSD <https://github.com/sergev/LiteBSD>; there's a PID 0 (or 1? IIRC) that is called the "swapper" process, which is in charge of implementing the context switching. Fascinating stuff!

It's a long shot, but some old games are available via https://www.scummvm.org/

Ultima 6 - I use ScummVM to play it. It's a great engine that provides a layer of UI compatibility over the game.

The game is "Beneath A Steel Sky", an old school point and click adventure. And though the graphics are pixel style, they are still very well done, and the game and story are still great. The emulator is ScummVM. There's some other games that were released as freeware.

ScummVM, which has been working on Adobe Director support, can detect the game (thank you @mistydemeo <3), but trying to run it will softlock you on the game's title screen, unable to click anything. It's likely this will be fixed in the future, but for now I can't recommend it for this particular game.
