Why aren't there good longbows in BG2?
There already are plenty of mods for this. SoD2BG2 does a bit, bringing IWD longbows like Sseth into BG2 (basically a longbow Tuigan), and an upgrade to the SoD Bow of the Banshee (+4, 20% chance of 4d4 damage party-safe banshee wail on hit). The Item Upgrade Mod has Teleomortis, a +4 infinite ammo bow (it also has throwing spears, which are cool). It also lets you upgrade the ToB infinite quivers to +3, which helps slings/xbows/shortbows as well, but is still useful to longbows.

Mod that has a second Illithium source?
I've got the Azengaard mod installed right now. You can obtain another 200 pounds of your favorite ore. You have to work for it, and kill a few Rune Assassins, but that's the way adventuring works. The original mod was a Spell Hold Studios hosted one, but right now SHS is off-line. An alternative is here, which I've tried, and it is bug free and that's with loads of other mods installed. What are some alternatives?
Solaufein - Weimer's classic mod changes Solaufein into a joinable NPC for BG2EE and ToB. Revised EE version.
SoD-to-BG2EE-Item-Upgrade - Imports more Siege of Dragonspear items into logical (to me at least) locations in BG2:EE during the Shadows of Amn campaign. They are attainable in a variety of ways – quest rewards, drops from enemies killed, shops, and containers.
Under-Respresented_Items - This mod adds items to Baldur's Gate 2. The items come from Icewind Dale 2. Only certain kinds of items were chosen. Items were selected to flesh out smaller weapon families.
Tweaks-Anthology - The Tweaks Anthology is a WeiDU compilation of nearly 200 components of cosmetic changes, house rules, and other tweaks. Some of these were fan requests, others are needed changes, and others simply make dealing with the more irritating aspects of the game engine easier. Each component can be installed separately so the player can pick and choose only which ones they wish to install.
Alora-NPC-for-BG2 - This mod brings Alora, the halfling thief, from Baldur's Gate to Baldur's Gate II. She can be found in Ribald's store
Adrian_NPC - Adrian Sianodel can be found in Irenicus' Dungeon. He is lawful evil half-elven sorcerer NPC, whose world view is influenced by some very dark philosophy, but he isn't a monster.
Forgotten-Armament - Add new items into BGEE, BG2EE, and EET
hiddenadventure - Hidden Adventures is a Quest/Tweak Mod for Baldur's Gate 2 (BGII, BGT, BGII:EE, EET). This is the most recent, official mod version.
bg2-wildmage - Wild Mage additions mod for Baldur's Gate 2
BG1NPC - The BG1 NPC Project adds a great deal of content by expanding the depth of character and levels of interaction with the NPCs from the Baldur's Gate game. Requires Tutu, BGT, or BGEE.
