AprilTags has readymade examples to read the ID of a tag, that could be of great help to you especially with how quick it is to set up.

https://github.com/OpenFTC/EOCV-AprilTag-Plugin It's really easy to use. You'll just need to print a different april tag on each sleeve. (I'd print a couple incase the sleeve is rotated a bit) The library returns an array with the location and direction of every april tag it can see.

Use EasyOpenCV (EOCV) with a webcam. You can even use the AprilTag plugin for it, https://github.com/OpenFTC/EOCV-AprilTag-Plugin, it will make your life even easier. Vision is also more precise than a distance sensor for detecting something on a field.

The SDK provides a UVC driver for webcams; it does not provide anything for phone cameras. If you'd really like to write your own implementation, you can use parts of https://github.com/OpenFTC/EasyOpenCV/blob/master/easyopencv/src/main/java/org/openftc/easyopencv/OpenCvWebcamImpl.java as a reference (which uses the SDK UVC driver), but do note that writing your own implementation means you need to write your own code for a live view, as well as handle threading etc.
