Beginner Game engines for intermediate JavaScript web developer?
Godot is an option. It features official support for GDscript (similar to python) and c#, but the engine has the ability to add other language bindings that are community-maintained. I cannot provide any feedback on using any custom bindings as when I was tinkering with Godot I used GDscript, but the engine itself is pretty nice and it is open source. Here is a link to a repo that has the JavaScript bindings: https://github.com/Geequlim/ECMAScript
- Godot 4.0 Stable
- Mobile App (only UI with buttons) in Godot
- Godot 3.5: Can't stop won't stop
- Godot 4.0 pre-alpha build from 2022-01-05

Coming from a mostly php/js background gdscript is strange to me because of the lack of curly braces.
You can write in JavaScript if you really like it.

Made my first contribution to Godot (website)!
It was just a minor hyperlink URL change on the contact page of the Godot website but still it feels so good to actually see the change in official Godot website. It's also my first merged pull request on github! I hope I can contribute something significant one day.

Godot Engine needs more funding for post-4.0 development
This is being worked on :)
-
Reduz:Thanks to recent donations and grants, Godot was able to secure funding required to hire the necessary contributors in order to do a 4.0 release without missing any major feature - Thread
I've been working on a Funding page with this information, but some things still need to be sorted out before it can be deployed.
What are some alternatives?
