Luckily, such a solution exists called OpenZiti; I work on the project - https://docs.openziti.io/docs/learn/introduction/. We have already taken Ziti's Java SDK and built it into Springboot (https://github.com/openziti/ziti-sdk-jvm/tree/main/ziti-springboot) and have a great blog here, too (https://blogs.oracle.com/javamagazine/post/java-zero-trust-openziti).
  • Is this book relevant for Java Network programming ?

I hazard a guess that if you are interested in Java and Networking, you will enjoy learning about the open source project I work on called OpenZiti (https://docs.openziti.io/). It allows you to embed zero trust networking and software-defined networking principles directly into your app via an SDK. We have an SDK - https://github.com/openziti/ziti-sdk-jvm - for Java apps (written mostly in Kotlin). We have further pre-built into Springboot (https://github.com/openziti/ziti-sdk-jvm/tree/main/ziti-springboot), can work with Netty etc.
  • Next gen deployment strategy for a Hackathon?

Maybe not the crux of your question, but something worth looking at that is interesting for a hackathon while removing the need for VPN connectivity would be OpenZiti. It's an open source private overlay network which allows us to easily implement zero trust networking principles - thus closing all inbound ports, don't worry about FWs, VPNs, etc. Even better, we have a suite of SDKs which allow us to embed inside an app... for example, we took our Java SDK and wrapped it around JDBC to allow 'clientless' access to a private DB using ZDBC - https://github.com/openziti/ziti-sdk-jvm/tree/main/ziti-jdbc
  • Tailscale is the coolest tech I've seen since 2014 when I discovered AWS

/u/jchrisfarris, I think OpenZiti is more transformational. It has similarities to Tailscale and ZeroTier but is 100% open source, built on zero trust principles (e.g., close all inbound ports, micro-segmentation, least privilege, private DNS and more), and even includes SDKs which can be embedded into an app or provide clientless options. For example, as you are focused on SQL, we took our Java SDK and wrapped it around JDBC to create ZDBC - https://github.com/openziti/ziti-sdk-jvm/tree/main/ziti-jdbc.
