At one time I thought a raw SPI interface would be an exception to this rule, I was surprised at what I learned when I tried rolling my own. Even in that example, I only ever transitioned on either always @(posedge SCK or posedge CSN) or always @(posedge sys_clk). Even then, the clocks required for transitioning to and from the system clock negated much of the advantage of doing something like this.
