Kodi opens to default skin even though I use Amber
I had some problems with Amber (the latest version from GitHub (repo.amber.matrix/repository.amber.matrix-1.0.2.zip at master · bartolomesoriano/repo.amber.matrix · GitHub) , not the older version from the Kodi repo)) with Nexus 20.0 but so far have not had any after upgrading to 20.1. They weren't the same problems OP mentioned, but perhaps upgrading will also take care of his as well.

Installing Amber skin from Github not kodi.tv
I just tried it on my shield and had no problems. This is the repo file I used. I was also able to install the skin via the repo. I also uninstalled the repo and installed the skin add on via from zip file. No problems at all. If that doesn't work, switch to the default estuary skin & try again.
