But like every system, it's a trade-off. If you only have one server and 6 hard drives, Ceph doesn't make sense. It works fine with 3 servers and the redundancy benefits are really nice even at this small size, but the benefits really begin at 5 or more, and the true power of its scalability is only obvious when you reach several dozen. I use Ceph as a core component of my PVC hypervisor manager, and almost everyone I tell about it balks at the idea of it needing 3 servers minimum. So take from that what you will.
  • Opinion: photos of hard drives + number of TB is dull dull dull

With that base, I run a 3x node Ceph cluster for bulk storage (mostly media/Linux ISOs/other various data like OwnCloud stores), a 3x node hypervisor cluster using my custom self-built hypervisor manager (https://github.com/parallelvirtualcluster/pvc), a shell box, custom FreeBSD routers, and somewhere around 80 VMs doing various things. With the exception of 4 VMs (inbound mail, website CDN, and external monitoring), everything is hosted in my house, not in the Cloud.
