  I wrote a script that does a bunch of things including deduplication with jdupes making hardlinks to preserve the structure but eliminate the extra disk space, snapshot, remove extra hardlinks before pushing a copy to GCS and S3 (because those backup targets don't support deduplication so the hardlinked files are uploaded as regular files incurring extra cost), then rollback the snapshot to the hardlink version. I run this every two months when I download the takeout archive.

  I download my Takeout archives every two months, run jdupes to recover the space from duplicates, snapshot the filesystem, run jdupes again to delete all the duplicate hardlinks, push up GCS Archive and S3 Glacier Deep for worst-case recovery (I delete the hardlinks so that I'm not paying for duplicate storage, because GCS and S3 don't dedupe), then rollback to the snapshot so I have the hierarchy preserved. I automate this of course through a script I published on GitHub.

  That said, feel free to look at my shell pipeline for extracting the Takeout archives, deduplicating the files on-disk, snapshotting for history and protection against corruption or accidental deletes, and pushing to Google GCS and Amazon S3.
