First real python project.. Is it feasible?
First of all, Google provides a python library to interact with it's maps/directions API. There is a documentation, however for more specific information (eg. output formats) you will have to refer to the General Google API documentation.

You could also look to this official library from google (https://github.com/googlemaps/google-maps-services-python), it's easier to use, but if you're learning doing it yourself like you are right now has its merits (learning).
