Is there a way to see the CLI options that the UI uses to do a complex launch?
Are you on a desktop Linux? I wrote a little CLI tool to run games directly from CLI or by assigning the program as default launcher for ROM file types (such as .smc), which gives the ability to run them on any filemanager. So you might be interested into it: https://github.com/thingsiplay/enjoy

On Linux, is it possible to create an application launcher link directly to a game, to be played through Retroarch?
I for myself created an application that uses a configuration file to determine which file extension belongs to which core: https://github.com/thingsiplay/enjoy Once you created that config file for this application, then you can just run `enjoy "path/to/rom.smc" instead and it would load up retroarch with correct core for you.

An easier way to open roms through Windows Explorer!
I went with wildcards and directory rules. I can see your configuration format has "extension" as key and it might be easy to extend the format to add additional check for file path (example key called "directory"). As I have 60 cores or so, there are a lot of overlapping. It can even run MAME games separated from FB Neo, and all sharing same .zip format. So having directory rules is important for such kind of program in my opinion. https://github.com/thingsiplay/enjoy

RetroArch playlist key extractor - Dirty way of reading and printing values from .lpl playlist files (commandline script)
BTW, enjoy is a little tool to play games from commandline (or the file manager directly) without starting RetroArch GUI (only on Linux). I created this script to run games with enjoy. More on that here: https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroArch/comments/np6mqf/enjoy_play_any_game_rom_with_associated_emulator/ and https://github.com/thingsiplay/enjoy
