Production grade robotic capabilities: First, C++ is already being used and is supported as it’s fully supported in gRPC. You can see an example of using it as a hardware component driver here https://github.com/viam-labs/cpp-sensor-example. The client is equally as simple. It is one of our core tenets that users be able to use whatever language they think is appropriate for the application and/or components. We have people using Python, C++, Rust, Typescript, Java, and C# already. Having written very large mission critical systems in C++ and other languages, I’m not convinced C++ is always the best, and therefore we’ve decided to leave it to the user. As for general safety and determinism concerns, we 100% agree those are the most important things to consider. Determinism is complicated in and of itself because the environment a robot is in isn’t deterministic. Robots are increasingly interacting with the real world in unknown ways using ML models. In the end, choice of language is only one factor in the safety and production grade of a system, and likely not the most important one.
