I think open sourcing for free labor is a common misconception. Most corporate led open source projects (eg, https://github.com/bottlerocket-os/bottlerocket from AWS or https://github.com/facebook/relay from Facebook) still require a team of employees.

Makes sense but these nodes are multi pod unlike fargate virtual nodes. Bottlerocket rather than firecracker, my bad. https://github.com/bottlerocket-os/bottlerocket/blob/develop/README.md

I've been meaning to take a look at Bottlerocket[^1] as an alternative to a custom spin of Kubernetes but we haven't really had a chance to dig into it. The folks over at Fly[^2] have built an awesome edge platform out of Firecracker, and ultimately, where I want to take the next generation of our internal compute offering. I am eagerly looking forward to any and all presentations they do on their work.

Parts of the Mozilla browser are built in Rust (not the entire rendering engine). The only big Rust product I know at Amazon is Bottlerocket, their OS for running containers.

That said - https://github.com/firecracker-microvm/firecracker and https://github.com/bottlerocket-os/bottlerocket are interesting, and while AWS CDK is very AWS specific, the underlying jsii https://github.com/aws/jsii and projen https://github.com/projen/projen/issues are fundamental services.

How long does it realistically take to become a medium/senior sysadmin, and which career path would you take?

So, this is a funny question to me. Hot take, the whole concept of a Linux server is heading towards obsolete. At the bleeding edge of infra, where sysadmins are talking about "cattle not pets", we don't even have cattle anymore. We have a hive of drone insects. If you look at Linux distros Flatcar or Bottlerocket, there's nothing you can even install at the OS level. Everything is containers now.
What size company should I aim for to avoid becoming a SaaS admin?

Hell, we're moving more and more towards container-only OS images like Google Container OS, Flatcar, Bottlerocket, etc.
