Check out WLED, there is a good chance that's going to be exactly what you want to control it. It runs on an ESP32 or ESP8266 microcontroller, and is quite robust. You can also get a more generic controller that would require little to no electronics work to run out of the box, but can also be flashed with WLED with a little work

Your connections are correct, I have found info on how to do it for your controller here. https://github.com/scottrbailey/WLED-Utils/blob/gh-pages/sp511e_wled.md It could be bad connections; of it is not already try to solder your connections to the pins on the board (Io0 pulled/shorted to ground while flashing )

One of my favorite controllers is the SP511E flashed with Sound Reactive WLED. It comes with a very nice 38 key remote. You’ll have to pull it apart and program. If you follow my guide, it takes less than 2 minutes to do. https://github.com/scottrbailey/WLED-Utils/blob/gh-pages/sp511e_wled.md
