"LibreOffice is better at reading old Word files than Word"
It’s worth remembering the x86 emulation on Apple Silicon is as good as it is (reportedly better than most other x86-on-ARM efforts) in part because of CPU features Apple added to the host platform for that explicit purpose, from memory ordering[1,2] to obscure flag bits[3].

Nvidia to Challenge Intel with Arm-Based Processors for PCs
I think it’s slightly more complex than that. Apple included in their processor design custom extensions to ARM that alter things like memory order to make emulation easier [1]. It’s not just control over the software stack that makes Rosetta so performant.

Apple M2 Pro to use new 3nm process
>I don't really need Rob to explain to me how Apple's processors do TSO ;)
Lemme just look up TSO and...

...Oh. Fair enough, my mistake :P
Is there not an instruction to switch into TSO mode, though? Wouldn't that technically count?

Ask HN: Can competitors catch up to Apple Silicon?
M1 implements TSO as a special mode specifically for x86 compatibility: https://github.com/saagarjha/TSOEnabler
If it didn’t have a performance penalty, it wouldn’t need to be a separate mode.

API for switching x86 TSO per thread on a emulator
I was wondering if any one has found a API provided by apple sdk for controlling the x86 TSO flag for x86 emulations. The idea is if there is a api it could be used in qemu x86 emulator for macos. I only found this https://github.com/saagarjha/TSOEnabler which doesn’t seems good choice since it depends on kernel versions.
