FINDER issue with generating video thumbnails (portrait instead of landscape)
If I recall correctly, OSX has no idea of what to do with MKV files. You'll need a plugin to fix it. This is the first one I ran across in some quick searching, and its last update is last year, so it probably still works. A plugin that adds full MKV support to the system might be out there, then they could see their videos via stuff like Finder's Quick Look...

Is there a way that I can get .flv's, .webm's, etc. to play with QuickLook so that I don't have to open a media player?
There are plugins available for Quicklook. These allow you to add different media types. Maybe this will work for you: https://github.com/Marginal/QLVideo/releases/tag/rel-194
As the title says. I found QLVideo which allows Finder to preview video files as static images, but I'm hoping to be able to watch them in full like I can an .mp4.
- Why some video files like mkv don't show the duration of the videos in Finder preview or under "Get Info"?
