If I recall correctly, OSX has no idea of what to do with MKV files. You'll need a plugin to fix it. This is the first one I ran across in some quick searching, and its last update is last year, so it probably still works. A plugin that adds full MKV support to the system might be out there, then they could see their videos via stuff like Finder's Quick Look...
