Real map in a game
I wrote PraxisMapper, a C# app that handles location-based game stuff. I put it together to cut down on how many external tools someone would need to make a location-based game. Here's a few details that I've noted over the years of working on it.

Got tired of Niantic's changes, decided to make my own Pokemon Go instead
I've spent a couple years working on PraxisMapper, a server to make my own location-based games, and decided to switch from making games roughly inspired by Pokemon Go over to making an actual fan game. I found a battle library that could be easily dropped into my server code, and did so, which lets me use full Pokemon battle logic instead of tap-to-dps, but I have AI on the server decide which moves to use instead of asking a person walking around to do that.

How can I develop a good location-based game
I wrote PraxisMapper, and you'll almost certainly want to use that for the backend if your game needs a server. It'll draw map tiles for you, handle player account data, and generally do everything you need a server-powered locative game to do. Start with the area around you and test with that, scale up to global data later.

Updates to Pokémon GO’s Remote Raids
If you want to make your own, better game, I can help. Been working on this for 2 years, and put together my own creature-collecting mobile game.

Private server for Pokemon Go?
The best you'll get is probably PraxisMapper and TIBO. They're my hobby projects, open source, and meant to be as cheap and easy as I can make them to run by scaling down pretty well.

How do I get started with the API?
I am putting together PraxisMapper to do location-based games, and it's open source. If you were trying to make your own game and not just cheat at PoGo, this is probably the best start. I have a creature collection client and plugin for the core server, and they're all open source.

Most location based games are made with MapBox. I made one with google maps js api. Do you think its all bad or got potential? https://mapcanvas3d.com
I've been working on my own setup for location-based game, PraxisMapper. I put it together partly because MapBox/Google Maps pricing gets pretty high pretty fast. I've also put together an actual Pokemon Go style game with it (TIBO - The Immortal Battle for Ohio) and have plans on a few more in progress.

Would my GPS Game server be of use to anyone?
https://github.com/PraxisMapper/PraxisMapper is the home for the source and docs. I THINK my documentation is complete enough for someone else to use to get it running.

How would you organize a GPS game between 2 friends in a city that have to 1/ track each other without knowing they are tracking each other, 2/ meet each other after about 1 hour and find out they were tracking each other, and 3/ have fun doing that?
Infrastructure-wise, I'd use PraxisMapper as a server for a phone app. Run it on a spare computer or a Raspberry Pi 4 or a cheap AWS instance on game day.
