I have done automatic benchmarking with ray tracing engines for computer vision algorithms, I work in the field. We may, understandably, have a disagreement on what exactly a z buffer is. To my understanding of this path tracing cuda kernel for NVIDIA OptiX ray tracer, the depth value is determined based on "closest hit" with the ground truth 3D model and rendered as a depth map. The depth map renders independently of the physically based rendering effects going on (refraction/diffusion etc.). So when I say "z buffer" I am referencing this stored depth value per ray based on closest hit of the ground truth 3D model.
