What do I need to know, buy, and do to smarten up the underfloor heating in my flat?
The valve actuators are simple devices: once they are powered, they start opening up (NC... normally closed), and this usually takes around 3 minutes. Then the hot water can flow. Once you cut the power, they close, which also takes around 3 minutes. The simple way to operate these is just: open them when you want heat and close them when you don't. There is a nicer way though: controlling them through PWM with a rather long interval (10-30min or so). Then you can regulate your temperature with a PI controller (or PID, but for these slow systems you typically don't need the D part). There is a nice custom component for HA that does exactly that. PI(D) controllers are somewhat of a complex topic, but for this I'd start with something like kp=25, ki=0.0025
