If you are the first type then you might want to look at ExpressLRS. A cutting edge open source control link based on existing 900Mhz and 1.4Ghz hardware.

  • Alternative RF Filter
Yeah, I noticed that text. Discreet component filter isn't really an option, I don't think. The project is a 2.4Ghz receiver, https://github.com/ExpressLRS/ExpressLRS/tree/master/PCB/2400MHz/RX_CCG_Nano
  • Crossfire or tracer?
I think it sends... RSSI and VBat back right now, maybe? Nothing like a full telemetry solution. https://github.com/ExpressLRS/ExpressLRS/pull/204 has been open forever and adds full telemetry.
  • Thru hole soldering makes a build so clean (full build in comments)
ELRS recently (well, since a couple months ago) added .frk boot loaders for reversibly flashing ELRS. Those you can flash using the passthrough. I assume you can then flash the rest of ELRS using the .frk bootloader, also using the passthrough. Probably with this tool https://github.com/AlessandroAU/ExpressLRS/blob/master/src/python/UARTupload.py. I think I'm going to buy a couple of those $10 Jumper R900 Minis and try ELRS :)
  • New to the hobby, made a bad purchase, need help.
You can also flash ExpressLRS to the MX, reversibly, from OpenTX menu using an S.Port cable https://github.com/AlessandroAU/ExpressLRS/blob/master/src/bootloader/r9mx_elrs_bl.frk
