I found a very strange planet in the black with an extremely high orbital eccentricity (0.9926), to the point where it breaks the ornery view of its orbital trajectory
(In case you haven't done so yet I suggest running EDDiscovery or EDDLite so it'll be recorded/updated to EDAstro.)

Starting My Deep Space Journey
My personal choice at the moment is EDMC; it has plugin support with some being very useful for exploration. Already mentioned is EDDiscovery - this is a more 'full on' tool but it's packed with features. There's also a new-ish one I've not yet tried myself that's designed to be far more light-weight; EDDLite.

What is the next best third party resource for a new player?
So another very light weight tool to consider that's almost purely for contributing data to the EDDN: EDDLite. It doesn't do much else aside from automatic screenshots converting and offering direct links to your ship build etc.

Exploration: what to scan?
If you are exploring in the black, mapping new systems, you would also need to run something like EDDI or EDDLite configured to send data to ESDM.net for the best experience.

ICARUS Terminal now shows biological, geological and other signal sources
It is still best to use something like EDDI or EDDLite to send data EDSM but ICARUS Terminal will blend that data with your local scan data to provide real time updates to a second screen as you explore when using a Discovery Scanner, Full Spectrum Scanner or Surface Scanner.

Out in the Black, what unicorns might exist?
EDDiscovery or EDDiscovery Lite (also EDMC can be used) I haven't even dug into the wealth of information gathered by EDD myself yet, but for me at least the main purpose of one of these applications is to automatically scan and upload your discoveries to data networks like EDSM and EDAstro, in an attempt to track the discoveries of the galaxy.

Engineering and the materials needed not adding up.
If you don't like the features, at least consider EDDLite for the real time benefits, complete data reporting, and, perhaps most important, giving back to the community and improving the game and tools for everyone.
