Processing OpenStreetMap PBF files at speed with Go

I see some tools out there like Pyrosm and gosmparse and I'm thinking to myself, "Can I just rip data straight from the osm.pbf file that's within my bounding box and then feed it into Mapnik as osm XML?" I'm pretty sure that I don't know what I'm doing and I'm too scared to ask a question like this on Stack lol.
