Prevent idle timeout when using a gamepad?

I just set up swayidle and it's working great, but it ignores gamepad inputs so my system goes to sleep if I'm playing a game with a gamepad. I found joystickwake but it doesn't appear to work with wayland. I can manually prevent idle with waybar's idle inhibitor, but automatic would be nice.

There is some interest in this feature: https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/6801, and this is probably the most relevant prior art: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/issues/66, but nothing that specifically addresses what can be done in the compositor to monitor gamepad inputs for idle purposes.
