Google Chrome Is Already Preparing To Deprecate JPEG-XL (~3x smaller than JPEG, HDR, lossless, alpha, progressive, recompression, animations)

This page summarizes the projects mentioned and recommended in the original post on /r/programming

Our great sponsors
  • WorkOS - The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS
  • InfluxDB - Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale
  • SaaSHub - Software Alternatives and Reviews
  • PNG-spec

    Maintenance of the PNG specification

  • Especially enticing as the PNG file format does allow for additional compression/filter methods and new ones could be added to a PNG 2.0 standard. A small wishlist discussion about that at the W3C's PNG specification Github.

  • Zpng

Better lossless compression than PNG with a simpler algorithm

  • Also, Chris Taylor published an experimental PNG library with Zstd hardwired in.

  • WorkOS

The modern identity platform for B2B SaaS. The APIs are flexible and easy-to-use, supporting authentication, user identity, and complex enterprise features like SSO and SCIM provisioning.

  • jpeg2png

    silky smooth JPEG decoding

  • That's not necessarily the case with the jpeg2png decoder, but it's been a while since I used it, and I'm not able to test right now. The PNG files will be smaller than with the usual JPEG decoding process, at least.

  • libjxl

JPEG XL image format reference implementation

  • The number of Google engineers who have contributed to libjxl (including myself) can be seen here: https://github.com/libjxl/libjxl/graphs/contributors

  • zopfli

Zopfli Compression Algorithm is a compression library programmed in C to perform very good, but slow, deflate or zlib compression.

  • I mean something better than Google's best engineers trying to optimize LZ77's compression as much as humanly possible, while remaining compatible with the DEFLATE/zlib bitstream.

  • InfluxDB

Power Real-Time Data Analytics at Scale. Get real-time insights from all types of time series data with InfluxDB. Ingest, query, and analyze billions of data points in real-time with unbounded cardinality.
