As an IT professional making recommendations to friends and family, I generally point people to Firefox, have them turn on HTTPS-Only Mode, install the open-source uBlock Origin by u/gorhill4 (Raymond Hill) for ad-blocking, and use a password manager like 1Password.
If they have the chops to set one up, I may suggest they set up a Pi-Hole on their network, so their mobile devices are also protected as that is an ad and tracker blocker for one's entire network.
