   gzip is still a mildly unfortunate choice of compression for something in 2022. Here it is compared with zstd on my latest save:

   7-Zip with support for Brotli, Fast-LZMA2, Lizard, LZ4, LZ5 and Zstandard

   

   The only real disadvantage is it's a little less widespread - e.g. for 7-Zip you need a plugin or fork to handle it.

4. Compactor

   A user interface for Windows 10 filesystem compression

   

   You can claw back a lot of it by marking the folder as compressed, or using Compactor/CompactGUI periodically.

5. CompactGUI
